Have you thought about growing locally-sourced ingredients for the craft beer industry? This hybrid, self-paced course will provide you with an overview of the brewing industry and the information you need to learn about the agricultural aspects of crafting the perfect brew. $100 fee covers all materials including a rhizome to grow your first hops plant this spring. Manchester Bidwell Applied Horticulture program operates the Drew Mathieson Center for Horticultural and Agricultural Technology educational greenhouse in Pittsburgh.
PSU World Campus online offers certificate and degree programs in Turfgrass Management.
Rodale Institute's Veteran Farming Training Program offers tailored, flexible, two-to-four month training in organic farming, that includes a stipend and housing allowance. This program targets the needs of those veterans who are interested in organic agriculture, but are not sure if they want to make a career change into agriculture.
Minnesota's South Central College's Swine Production certificate program uses a hybrid format combining video conference links and computer web pages (online). Students do not have to be on campus to complete the courses in the certificate. This design minimizes biosecurity issues related to pig production. For info and a course schedule, contact UPDATE: This program is not currently approved for GI BIll, but the college hopes to receive approval for the course this summer. Please check with the project coordinator before enrolling.
The Seed Farm, in Emmaus, PA (Lehigh county), offers an 8 month training program covering all aspects of managing a diversified vegetable farm. Trainees receive an average of 20 hours of training per week from early March through the end of October. They are not yet accepting 2017 applications.
